Conclusion

This chapter has focused on the ascetical principle of beginning with small steps, which will eventually lead us to unceasing prayer. Too often Christians are deterred from beginning a more systematic course of action because the program they are told to undertake overwhelms them before they even begin. A Christian who does not have the simple habit of reading, for example, is not likely to make much progress in the thirty-day Ignatian exercises, which require the intense engagement of the imagination. The four exercises that we have considered can be practiced throughout life, but they are also simple enough for a beginner to use.
